When you live in between the vivacious proud community of the Heights, and the soulful community of Harlem, it really makes you take a good look at the community you live in. Me, as a person living borderline to Harlem in a little Spanish neighborhood, makes me think of the things that would tie the people of my area together as one; as a community. So with influences from the surrounding communities, Hamilton, where I live, is diverse and very different from all the other communities. But what is the one true factor tying the young kids, the single parents, the college students, and the elders from my neighborhood into ONE community? Well, that would be the Riverbank State Park Community.
Riverbank State Park, located on 145th by the Hudson River, built 69 feet above the West Side Highway and a sewage treatment facility, is the one true place where anyone and everyone can come and participate in whatever it is they want at the same time, no matter what their interests are. With the multiple playgrounds for the kids, Olympic sized indoor pool, outside pool, 800 seat theater, track field, athletic complex, fitness room, basketball courts, skating rink, sprinklers, playgrounds, and the many areas to have the perfect picnic, my whole community of Hamilton can come live life surrounded by their fellow neighbors and friends in the perfect environment.
Now what about Riverbank, shows off the talented and gifted people surrounding me? Well, the many events such as tournaments for sports, performances, and fun events for the kids allows everyone to enjoy themselves. The different tournaments held allow neighborhood schools to compete with outside schools in basketball, swimming, skating, and any other sport. Everyone can sit down under the same roof and participate in the athletic achievements of others and be able to be proud of them.
The younger kids also can enjoy themselves with the little carnivals that take place during the summer. Clowns, food, dancing, and rides are brought in so that the kids too can take part in what the wonderful community of Riverbank State Park is. Summer camps are also ways for parents to let the children enroll themselves with other kids while doing something productive during their time off in the summer. At the end of the season, the parents are all invited for a little showcase displaying the many things their kids have learned in the past months.
The fact that Riverbank State Park allows people to excel in athletics, education, and relaxation in the perfect family environment is what makes it a TRUE community. The ability for one place to provide so many things at once can be very hard to find, especially in an area that isn't always the best. The activities and opportunities given shows the strive MY COMMUNITY is making towards a better environment and better future for their kids.
